How Mobile Apps are transforming cruise and cargo operations, despite connectivity and implementation hurdles
It’s no longer just a matter of fashion or technological showmanship: the adoption of mobile applications has now fully permeated the maritime sector, impacting onboard operations—and not just passenger lines—by altering operational practices and improving the technical management of vessels.
Mobile apps, both on cruise ships and cargo vessels, have quickly demonstrated significant benefits, such as optimised operations, reduced administrative costs, and an improved experience for passengers and crew. However, there are still notable challenges related to connectivity, staff training, cybersecurity, and implementation costs.
Despite these obstacles, adopting such technologies seems set to grow, driven by ongoing developments in satellite connectivity and digital security.
This topic was the focus of the recent Arribatec Marine Roadshow, held in Limassol on October 4th, titled “Beyond Borders: Navigating Mobility in IT for the Maritime Sector.” As a provider of Mobile app solutions designed to streamline, standardise, and optimise maintenance, procurement, and logistics operations on board (whether for cruise ships or cargo vessels), our company has direct experience with applying these technologies and a deep understanding of their pros and cons.

Thanks to the participation of several of our clients, who shared their case studies during the event, it was highlighted that connectivity issues are becoming less of a concern. New telecommunications technologies, such as Starlink, are offering greater consistency in data transmission between ship and shore.
A key consideration when discussing mobile solutions in the maritime sector is understanding the nature and extent of the needs driving the adoption of these solutions, ensuring usability is built in from the outset.
Onboard Mobile Applications: Pros & Cons
Together with our clients and partners, we have analysed the main pros and cons of using mobile apps on board ships, regardless of type. One of the most significant advantages is the optimisation of onboard operations. Apps enhance the management of tasks, monitor real-time processes (such as cargo, fuel consumption, and weather conditions), and simplify communication between ship and crew, or ship and shore. This also helps reduce the administrative burden onshore, thanks to the digitisation of documents and procedures.
Another key benefit is safety and monitoring. Apps improve safety management on board by monitoring the health of crew and passengers and providing timely information in case of emergencies.
However, some challenges remain, especially for those managing cargo vessels. Limited connectivity is one of the primary hurdles, as ships often operate in areas with poor or expensive internet access, limiting the effectiveness of apps that require continuous data access.
Other challenges include the costs of implementation and maintenance. Adopting these technologies requires significant initial investment as well as ongoing expenses for updates, maintenance, and security. Another challenge is dependency on technology: a heavy reliance on apps can be problematic if they malfunction, or if the crew or passengers are not sufficiently trained or comfortable using the technology.
Lastly, the issue of training and adaptation is particularly relevant, although newer generations of crew are increasingly familiar with the use of apps. Continuous training is still necessary, especially as not all passengers, particularly on cruises, are used to or willing to engage heavily with mobile technology.
In conclusion, while mobile apps offer significant advantages in terms of efficiency and service quality, the technological and operational challenges remain critical issues to address. However, the current landscape points towards a positive trend, thanks to ongoing technological progress.
